NRF 2024: What does the future of retail have in store?

Feb 6 2024

Once again, the Orquest team has kicked off the year with the NRF, the ultimate rendez-vous where the future of retail is discussed and industry leaders can’t afford to miss. This 2024 we went all out with the booth experience, putting Orquest Smart Planning in the spotlight at Retail’s Big Show. The energy was amazing as we showcased how Orquest transforms retail operations, swapped insights with experts, and sparked some fantastic connections.

The game-changing influence of Artificial Intelligence was the talk of the town, stealing the spotlight with its inevitable role in shaping the future of retail. AI shared the stage with retailers ready to redefine in-store experiences through tech-savvy moves and innovative strategies, and discussions about balancing customization and privacy. Let’s dive into some of the top NRF retail predictions for 2024.

AI is the future of retail

AI is redefining the retail landscape, removing the limitations that companies previously grappled with and opening an era of optimization, automation and faster, more accurate decision making. Its presence has radically transformed the retail business model. No wonder the industry ranks second globally in spending on AI technology, according to IDC.

Retailers embracing AI and machine learning are reaping substantial rewards, shows a study by IHL Group, experiencing 2.3x growth in sales and 2.5x growth in profits compared to their competitors by 2023, a trend that the NRF predicts will persist into 2024.

AI’s benefits for retailers cover a broad spectrum, most notably in optimizing store operational efficiency. Orquest is the best example. It learns and analyzes historical store data to forecast sales behavior, calculate daily staffing needs, and generate an optimal schedule distribution that matches demand with in-store employees. By doing so, it streamlines operations, improves efficiency and elevates the in-store experience for retail consumers and workers.

Elevating the in-store shopping experience

The search for innovative and engaging ways to improve customer interactions in retail stores through technology stands out as another top priority for the future of retail. Retailers recognize the need to quickly adapt to the changing expectations of consumers, who are increasingly looking for elevated experiences, greater personalization and seamless integration between the physical and digital realms.

In this regard, and according to the NRF, Generation Alpha, made up of people born since 2010, is emerging as a force in retail. Despite not yet having disposable income, these digital natives exert substantial influence over their parents’ purchasing decisions and have strong opinions about their encounters with retail. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, Gen A values the physical shopping experience.

In response to this changing retail landscape, there is a clear need for innovation. Orquest stands once again as the go-to solution to address these challenges in delivering an elevated in-store experience. By optimizing store efficiency and strategically placing the right people where and when customers need them, Orquest facilitates the creation of meaningful and engaging retail interactions in line with the changing demands of Generation Alpha and the broader consumer base.

Privacy and compliance at the forefront

The ideal is an experience where a brand recognizes and adapts interactions based on the customer’s online journey, and that translates seamlessly across multiple channels. But to do so, it needs personal information about the customer: their age, their purchasing habits, their interests?

The search for increasingly personalized retail experiences, accelerated by technologies such as AI, accentuates the concern for the protection of customers’ personal data, making it a priority to ensure compliance with the law. What’s more, legislation is getting stricter and if retailers agree on one thing, it’s that regulatory compliance is one of the main challenges for the future of retail.

Orquest ensures compliance with even the most complicated privacy regulations, subjecting itself to the strict European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR). Committed to ethical and responsible data practices, Orquest conforms to all global standards, safeguarding the privacy rights of its clients and their teams.

Here’s some more

Remaining trends discussed at the NRF 2024 include the emergence of deepfake technology, raising security concerns, the growing momentum of the circular economy where retailers grapple with effectively communicating sustainability initiatives, and a resurgence of augmented reality experiences driven by technologies such as Apple’s Vision Pro or the Metaverse.

All this offers a glimpse into the future of retail, a landscape shaped by technological advancements, evolving consumer behaviors, and a commitment to ethical practices. Navigating these trends requires a strategic and agile approach, ensuring that retailers not only keep pace with change but also stay ahead of the curve in this dynamic and ever-evolving industry. And where Orquest excels.
